Parents (or other guardians) are the primary support for their children and
the laws relating to early intervention services, education, health care,
and practical accommodations in society are the foundation. Advocacy skills
and knowledge of applicable laws are important tools for parents and
caregivers of a child with a chronic medical condition or disability.
Parents of children with disabilities and self-advocates are the most
important voice in making education and life decisions for themselves or
family members. It is important to learn advocacy skills and to work with
others in the community to ensure that all children receive a quality
education.

“The only pure and consistent advocates for a child are his or her parents
or family members,” explains Betsy Primm, coordinator of Georgia Learning
Resource Services Metro-North branch. “That doesn’t mean that educators
don’t advocate every day for their students, but year in and year out, that
is a parent’s role.” |
